WordPress: is it the right solution for all businesses?
WordPress is undoubtedly one of the most widely used and appreciated CMS platforms in the world, thanks to its ease of use, large community of developers and wide range of plugins and themes available. However, WordPress is not always the ideal choice for the needs of all businesses, especially large ones.
To choose or not to choose WordPress?
Many digital marketers, frustrated by the limitations and complexity of enterprise content management and web experience management (WCM) systems, ask themselves, "Why can't we just use WordPress?" This question often arises from those who have already had positive experiences with WordPress for personal websites or blogs, or from those who have outsourced the creation of a microsite on this platform to an external agency.
Although it is constantly evolving and improving, WordPress is still closer to the "product/platform" end of the spectrum and, like all technologies, has both strengths and weaknesses. For many organisations, especially large enterprises, WordPress may not be suitable for generic WCM services, despite offering an exceptionally productive solution for blogs and microsites.
Symptoms of a deeper problem
Often, criticism of enterprise WCM systems reflects not so much a shortcoming of the platform itself, but rather an inability to implement it in a way that empowers marketers.
Some of the most common symptoms are:
- Repository too large and difficult to navigate
- Inefficient workflows or approval processes
- Problematic rich text editor
- Difficulty in creating microsites without IT intervention
- Limited ability to easily add or move widgets
- Site structure too rigid
- Page structure too rigid
- Content model too complex
- Difficulty for external marketing agencies in distributing sites on the corporate platform
In these cases, the solution is not necessarily to switch to WordPress, but to adopt a simpler and more flexible approach to configuring business systems and processes.
